Ironbridge

More from the archives, this time Ironbridge in Shropshire.

The area around Ironbridge is described as the “Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution“. This description is based on the idea that Abraham Darby perfected the technique of smelting iron with coke, in Coalbrookdale, allowing much cheaper production of iron.  Construction began in 1779 and the bridge opened on New Year’s Day 1781. In 1986 Ironbridge became part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site (which covers the wider Ironbridge Gorge area) and has become a major tourist attraction within Shropshire

I know it well – I was based at Shawbury for 4 years – it is an incredible structure in a wonderful landscape – but a real challenge to capture (so many images of the bridge exist) but B&W works very well in an area where light is difficult
